University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Pedestrian Tunnel

The UNCG pedestrian tunnel is a 200’ long, pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the Norfolk Southern rail line that ensures safe and convenient access for students coming to and from the campus. We used brick and pre-cast concrete to tie the design to UNCG’s architectural history. The blue and yellow colors weave through the tunnel’s vaulted ceiling to illustrate progress and advancement. We created gateway icons and strategically placed lighting to illuminate the pathway at night. We also designed a signature park plaza at the end of the tunnel to enhance the campus landscape, champion a natural habitat and create a sense of place and destination for active and passive student activities. The design also integrates plans for future campus development and connects the campus to the community.
